Zamzam water from Mecca

Zamzam is Arabic and also known as Zemzem or "Sem's Spring". It is the name of a well located in the courtyard of the Great Mosque in Mecca (Saudi Arabia). It is particularly well known in the Muslim faith and its water is said to have healing powers. According to tradition, this is because it originated directly in Paradise.

How do Muslims deal with Zamzam water?

Faithful Muslims do not only pray in the direction of Mecca. They also make a pilgrimage to this holy place of pilgrimage, and as part of a pilgrimage ritual they drink the Zamzam water. Small amounts they are allowed to take with them, and this amount can be between 10 and 20 liters of water.

Saudi law states that export is not desired. Nevertheless, there is a trade in Zamzam water in Mecca during the Umrah (Muslim small pilgrimage) and the Hajj (large Muslim pilgrimage). There are special canisters for this purpose, which must also be separately shrink-wrapped for export from the country.

What is the history of Zamzam water?

There are Islamic traditions that say that Hagar and her son Ismail, the first son of Abraham, were traveling in the desert. They were close to dying of thirst and God made the spring come up in the middle of the desert. Hagar, anxious and exhausted, ran back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa in search of water. When she was on her way for the seventh time, the spring gushed forth at the feet of her child. The valley was otherwise arid, and this spring that gushed forth is said to have caused people to settle there. The origin of Mecca was laid.

Pilgrims still commit the ritual of remembering the search and effort and walking back and forth seven times during the Hajj between the two mounds, which are now inside the great mosque.

The water was forgotten until Abd al-Muttalib Ibn Hāshim, the grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad, dug up the Zamzam spring again. He needed a vision to do so, and during this excavation he also found the treasures that his ancestors had buried there.

A dispute arose over the goods, which were ultimately distributed by arrows. Zamzam was also the subject of fighting as part of these disputes. Both parties, the Abd al-Muttalib with the Kaaba and the Quaraish, wanted to consult an external judge. On the way, they again succumbed to a water shortage until Abd al-Muttalib's camel found a spring. The parties saw this as a sign from God and since then the Quaraish conceded the spring to the other parties.

However, the spring means not only glory and honor for the tribe, but also the duty to water the pilgrims.

History divided the spring into the part of the watering and the part of the ritual washing.

Meanwhile, the spring is protected by marble slabs and a wooden grid.

How is Zamzam water obtained?

Zamzam water is slightly alkaline and somewhat similar to seawater. Nowadays, of course, it is no longer pumped manually, but with pumps. To ensure that there is enough water for everyone during the great pilgrimages, sufficient water is pumped beforehand and stored temporarily in tanks.

Zamzam water is purified not by chlorine, but by UV irradiation.

What is the effect of Zamzam water?

The legendary water, rich in tradition, still has a high mineral content. It is therefore said to have a germicidal and healing effect.

The amazing thing about the well is that it is far from other sources and apparently keeps refilling itself.

Scientists and researchers have also studied the phenomenon and were able to determine that the water is massively different from other waters, both in structure and energy field.

Prophet Muhammad tasted the water and remarked that it was "a noble meal and great remedy." Moreover, he said, it is "that for which one intends to drink it." Accordingly, the effect varies according to the intent of the consumer. In the Muslim faith, therefore, it is said to be Sunnah (a noble course of action of the Prophet) to drink Zamzam water, to wash oneself with it, and to sprinkle it on sick persons.

We are pleased to present to you here today Zamzam water in high quality. We remain true to our principle of fair trade and sustainability.
