What Is Khayamiya?
- Khayamiya is elaborately patterned and colorful appliqués applied to the interior of tents, serving a dual function of shelter and ornament.
- They resemble quilts and possess the three layers typical of quilts – a heavy "back", a background "top", and elaborate appliqué over the "top".
- Functionally, they can be compared to curtains, though their recent roles have diversified to cater to touristic purposes. These now include cushion covers, fashion, bags, bedspreads, and other applications.
What is the Tentmaker art / Khayamiya History?
- More than 100 years ago, French archaeologist Gaston Maspero excavated a 21st Dynasty Egyptian tomb and found a tent made of leather.
- During the Khedival period (1867-1914), the Tentmakers used cotton dyed by hand in shades of red, white, and blue, as well as recycled fabrics. Their designs have changed dramatically over the last two centuries, drawing from a wide range of sources across the history of Islamic visual culture.
- The Mamluk era saw Islamic art flower, and the elements of Mamluk style remain a foundational influence in tentmaking decoration. The sinuous and methodical beauty of complex designs whose lines and curves repeat and interweave draws from this period.
